“ Matiff “, Matera A in F F is pleased to announce the opening of the prestigious Photography Contest “ The Human Ambient “ with the sponsorship of the Region of Basillicata as well as with the most important regional, national and European Institutions in order to promote the culture, tourism and preservation of the territory.

The Contest arises from the famous artistic landscapes of the city of Sassi in Matera and it’s addressed to Master, Amateur and School sections under the Artistic Direction of Raffaele Petralla – famous documentary photographer.

The Theme. ‘’The Human Ambient ‘’ is focused on the exploration of a human’s nature that undertakes a journey of the knowledge and discovery of itself in respect to the surrounding environment – an internal journey that starts with an observation of the outside ( external ) world. Within this external perspective, it glimpses the sense of infinity that has always encouraged mankind to overcome its own limits. A visual story of the human dimension which is, by quoting Hildegard von Bingen, “a drop of the water crossed by the shapes of the world” that is reflected by the universe. The journey of knowledge opens the gaze to different perspectives and to a renewed awareness of the nature’s value. A visual story of this different contemporaneity and environment is being understood in its broadest sense, with its changed territories and landscapes, non-places and its solitary but more peaceful and less noisy atmospheres. A narrative of these, probably more silent times that can make life to resemble a natural laboratory extremely useful for understanding the effects of humans on the planet and to design more effective responses to the biodiversity crisis that man is largely responsible for.

1. THE CONTEST

For the occasion of Matera Art International Film Festival 01, the cultural association MATIFF, in collaboration with the Region of Basilicata has announced the photography contest ‘’ The Human Ambient ‘’

Procedure of the Contest chooses the group of work of the finalists that will be better explained in the following part. The work of the finalists will be exposed in the final exhibition that will take part in Matera, Italy.

In the case of the Sanitary Emergency situation, the final ceremony that includes the announcement of the winners, motivational readings, the award ceremony and the inauguration of the exhibition could be held within the official platform.

2. THEME

3. SECTIONS

Il Contest is divided into three sections: Masters (art. 4- 9), Amateurs (art. 4-10), and the School section (art. 11-12);

4. CONDITIONS

Conditions of the Participation: Il Contest is open for everyone above the age of 18 and to all of the master and non-masterphotographers. Organizations, the associates and the Jury members of the present Contest are not allowed to participate.

5. PARTECIPATION METHOD

The participation of the Contest consists an enrollment fee of € 15,00 (fifteen) for each photographic series ( explained bellow) with the following payment information :

Each participant can send up to a maximum of two photographic series (series: minimum 8 – maximum 12).

Each photograph must contain an indication of the respective geographic location and cannot be selected and / or awarded in other competitions.

The application needs to be sent via free service – wetransfer.com which allows to candidates to receive the confirmation from the organizers. . The requested material, sent by wetransfer.com needs to be addressed to the following address : premiofotografia@matiff.it with the following materials :
• Photographs (max 12 per series ) JPG format ;
• A duly signed registration form (digital signature or analogue signature in a scanned pdf format), with attached photocopy of the declarant’s identity document;

Each photo file must be named with the initials of the author, followed by the underscore symbol (_), the title of the project and the number of the work (ex: nc_biodiversity01.jpeg and so on);

6. TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS

Black and white or color photographs are allowed, in JPG format, with the maximum size not exceeding 1500 pixels.

It is not allowed to add frames and writings to the photographs.

Photomontages, double exposures, composite photographs of any kinds (HDR, focus stacking, panoramas, STITCH, photo mosaics, etc.), solarisation or the Sabbatier Effect, , digital filters or digital retouching, or particular post-production processing are not allowed except for slight corrections of color, contrast, under penalty of exclusion from the competition.

The Jury keeps the right to request ( if necessary ) the original files of the sent photographs.

7. TERMS OF SUBMISSION

The submission of works for the matter of the Contest (file with the specifications indicated above), and of the registration form completed in its entirety, must be made to the email address indicated above via wetransfer.com, starting from publication of this announcement and until the fixed deadline, 26.06.2021 by 23:59, under penalty of exclusion from the competition.

8. COPYRIGHTS

The works entered in the competition can be nominated only by their author, who declares by sending the work to: Have the exclusive property of the material presented and to be the exclusive owner of all moral and patrimonial copyrights of the photographs; that their work does not include any third party rights and that it does not violate any applicable law.

In any case, the author relieves ‘’ MATIFF ‘’ from all responsibilities, costs and charges of any kind, without exception, that may be incurred due to the content of the work. In any case, by submitting the photographs, the candidate certifies their authenticity and ownership.

Furthermore, the author grants ‘’MATIFF’’ association an irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, transferable license, without any royalty, worldwide for the use and public display of the works sent, non-profit and with the only restriction of citation of the author. Notwithstanding the foregoing, this license also includes, among other things, the right to: (1) reproduce and / or transfer the photographs in other formats and / or multiply them in copies, in whole and / or in part, in any manner and / or form, with any procedure of reproduction; (2) communicate, transmit and / or disseminate the photographs to the public by any means.

‘’MATIFF ‘’ association reserves the right to reproduce these photographs for promotional purposes of the Contest itself or for the promotion of the association and its events in any form and place, including internet, with the obligation of mentioning the author’s name in any times. The association declares that the photographs received will NOT be used for commercial purposes.

Participants acknowledge that ‘’ MATIFF ‘’ association and the event partners do not assume the responsibility for any improper use of the photographs.

9. REASONS FOR THE EXCLUSION FROM THE COMPETITION

Photographs that ARE NOT aligned with the statements bellow will be excluded from the competition:
– Submission deadline
– Indication of the required data of the photographs, in addition to the failure to sign all parts of the participation form;
– Sending the photographs that do not comply with the requirements established by the announcement.

10. AMATEUR SECTION

A section dedicated and open to amateur photographers has been set up, with free and open participation, to which the same criteria and rules as in the previous points 4-9 must be considered applicable, with an exception of the registration fee;

11. SCHOOL SESSION

A special section of the competition is reserved to all of students of 1st and 2nd grade of Secondary Schools in the Region of Basilicata.

‘’Matiff’’ association will send a copy of this announcement by e-mail to schools within the region.

Schools aiming to join the project must send an email to the following address premiofotografia@matiff.it by 10 May 2021. Subsequently, they will have to collect the applications from their students (filled in using the attached facsimile) and always send to the mentioned email address no later than 25 May 2021.

Entries must be sent no later than 26 June 2021 to the email address premiofotografia@matiff.it via wetransfer.com.

It should be noted that each photo must be accompanied by a title and a brief explanatory comment, indicating the author (or authors) and their school.

Students can participate individually or in groups; each one can present one or more photographs, (up to a maximum of 6 – six), in black / white or in color, preferably with a horizontal orientation, which express individually or as a whole the reflection made and the idea that the author wanted to develop.

12. CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION AND / OR EXCLUSION.

The participation of students in the competition is free of charge.

Each participant is responsible for what is the object of his photograph, therefore it undertakes to exclude any liability of ‘’ MATIFF’’ towards third parties.

In particular, he / she declares that he/she is the author of the sent photographs and that they are original, unpublished and do not harm the rights of third parties and, if they portray subjects for whom consent or authorization is required, they must have been obtained.

By submitting an application, all the rules of this regulation are unconditionally accepted.

It is not allowed to add frames and writings to the photographs.

13. SELECTION OF THE FINALISTS FOR THE FINAL EXHIBITION AND THE WINNERS

Submitted photographs will be posted to the technical pre-selection made by the organizers and to the subsequent judgment of merit by a Jury of experts, who will proceed from the examination of the works to the selection of 3 finalist series in each section. These finalists, with their work will be presented in the final exhibition, as well as the winners of the Contest. The jury will be composed of three professionals:
● Nina Todorovic (president)
● Raffaele Petralla
● Riccardo Bononi

14. SELECTION CRITERIA

The selected photographs will be chosen in the most effective way, within discretion of the Jury. It will be based on the profile that comes up with artistic, substantial and quality photographs that are aligned with the theme of the Contest.

Decision of the Jury is final and not changeable.

15. FINAL EVENT 2021

The announcement of the winners, reasons, and the Award ceremony will take place with an official ceremony and is to be held on 26 June 2021 for the school section and on 18 September 2021 for the master and amateur sections, possibly even live on the web in the case of extension of the current restrictive measures. The list of the three finalists, without indication of the actual position, respectively of the Masters and Amateurs sections, will be announced via social channels by 11 September 2021. The three finalists of both sections will be invited to participate in the ceremony for the proclamation of the winners. The organization of the Contest expresses the will and the intention to organize an Official event in presence for the announcement of the winners, if the Covid-19 emergency allows it. The photos of the finalist series of all sections will be exhibited in an exhibition, at the expense of the ‘’MATIFF’’ association, and will be the subject of communication activities on the web and on social media

All participants will receive an invitation to the final award ceremony and other communications relating to the contest on the e-mail address indicated during registration.

‘’MATIFF ‘’association does not guarantee any economical aids for any expenses incurred by the winners.

17. PRIVACY

In accordance with the EU general regulation 2016/679 (“GDPR”), the organizers guarantee the protection of personal data received. Competitors accept the processing of personal data, the collection of which is carried out exclusively for the purposes related to the competition. Failure to authorize implies the inability to participate. Competitors also accept any publication of data for all initiatives related to the competition, for which the indication of mandatory data is required. The competitor has the right to access the data concerning him and to exercise the rights of integration, rectification, cancellation at any time, by sending a request to premiofotografia@matiff.it

The data will be stored and protected by adopting appropriate methods for the period of time necessary for the execution of the requested service, and will subsequently be archived for a period of two years, unless otherwise established.

18. DISPUTES

For any controversy the competent Institutions in the Court of Matera.

19. ACCEPTANCE

Participation in the competition implies full acceptance of this announcement and, in particular, of the points: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13,14, 17, 18

This contest is not subject to ministerial authorization pursuant to the D.P.R. n. 430 of 26/10/2001, art. 6
